Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a non-specific
disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal
pain and fatigue. Although fibromyalgia is considered
a rheumatologic disorder, relatively little is
known about its causes. The symptoms of fibromyalgia
are often chronic and fluctuate in severity.
Typical
diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia include:
- Pain
of at least three months in duration
- Pain in the
upper and lower, and right and left sides of
the body
- Pain in at least 11 of 18 tender
points
(see Figure for the location of the nine
paired tender points that comprise the 1990 American
College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria for
fibromyalgia)
Other symptoms of fibromyalgia
include:
- Fatigue
- Stiffness
- Parathesias
- Headaches
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Raynaud’s-like
symptoms
- Depression
- Anxiety
The treatment of fibromyalgia
includes:
- Education about symptoms
- Low
impact exercise
- Physical therapy
- Cognitive behavioral
therapy
Long-term Treatment
Physicians often recommend that fibromyalgia patients
maintain a healthy diet low in fat and high in
fiber, with plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits,
fish and vegetables. Medications, such as antidepressants
and anti-inflammatory agents, can be helpful
for individuals who do not respond to lifestyle
interventions. Unfortunately, many medications
can produce harmful side effects that worsen
fibromyalgia symptoms.
Recent Evidence
Suggests that Omega-3s Can Help
Research suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia
suffer from excessive oxidative stress. And antioxidants,
such as omega-3s, may be useful in the treatment
of this disorder. Studies have shown that a deficiency
of omega-3s in the body may worsen the symptoms
of fibromyalgia.
Since omega-3s have been
shown to reduce joint pain and morning stiffness
in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, experts
believe omega-3 supplements may also help those
who suffer from fibromyalgia. Unlike many anti-inflammatory
medications, including ibuprofen, Aleve, and
Celebrex, fish oil won’t cause the side
effects that may worsen the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
