Experts Agree that
Fish Oil Is an Essential Part of a Healthy Diet
The
American Heart Association (AHA) recommends
omega-3s for people with and without heart disease.
According to the AHA, those with heart disease
should consume 1 gram of omega-3s per day. The
U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement
acknowledging that omega-3s help to reduce the
incidence of coronary heart disease.
Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Omega-3s have also been observed
to help:
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve
HDL, the body’s “good
cholesterol”
- Potentially improve the body’s
balance of HDL and LDL cholesterol
- Lower triglyceride
levels
How It Works
Experts believe omega-3s block the build-up of
plaque in the arteries and reduce blood clots.
Also, the potent anti-inflammatory effects of the
omega-3 EPA may help reduce harmful inflammatory
mediators (such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes,
and interleukins) known to damage important arteries.
